Tourism Minister Najib Balala is expected to market Kenya as a safe tourist destination at the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) conference in Geonjiu City, South Korea.

Tourism Minister Najib Balala is expected to market Kenya as a safe tourist destination at the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) conference in Geonjiu City, South Korea.

Balala will address the conference that kicked off on Sunday and attended by members from 154 countries.

The conference aims at fostering development in tourism in all its member countries.
In the meeting that lasts one week, member countries will be pointing out success stories and sharing experiences in the world of tourism.

“Kenya’s enactment of the tourism bill, diversification of markets and focus on new and emerging markets and the efforts towards marketing East Africa region as a favorable tourist destination are some of the things that the tourism ministry is currently focusing on will be among highlight of Kenya’s delegation agenda,’’ a brief statement from the ministry said.

The meeting comes five months after Kenya hosted the UNWTO Executive Council in Mombasa.

Balala said in the statement that tourism, if adequately managed could be harnessed as a significant force for poverty alleviation.

He said in line with the Millennium Development Goals, poverty alleviation should be a priority in both developed and developing countries.

In Kenya, UNWTO is supporting the Sustainable Tourism Eliminating Project (STEP), an initiative that seeks to identify and implement projects aimed at poverty alleviation.

Construction of the Kitengela footbridge project that now links Nairobi National park to Kitengela is just one of the six projects financially and technically supported by the UNWTO.

The footbridge links Nairobi National Park to Kitengela and it has suitable footpaths to and from the bridge.
